Ahoy hoy is proud to present...May68!

Hello? (hello, hello) Is there anybody out there?

Wow. It's been a while since I have written in this blog. 13 months to be exact. So what have I been up to that's been keeping me so busy and away from Ahoy hoy for so long? Well 2 things.

1. I do Ahoy hoy mainly on Facebook now because it's easier I feel for people to interact with. (https://www.facebook.com/AhoyHoyBlog/)

and 2...

Because I have been working hard this last year on debuting my own clothing line!

Presenting ....May68!

So a little backstory on this thing I'm doing called May68. Oh boy. Here we go.

I've worked in apparel domestic production here in LA for the last 8 years. During that time I have meet the most amazing, smart, talented, incredibly hardworking and friendly people in the factories i've worked with, with the fabric vendors i've bought from, fabric cutters, pattern makers, marker makers, screen printers and everything else in between. It gave me an incredible sense of pride for the people working in apparel in Los Angeles and also taught me the value of quality, local work.
I started May68 because it was a way for me to give back to the unsung heroes of Los Angeles manufacturing. To the very un glamourous side of fashion with it's loud, dusty sewing facilities, late nights staying up to get the project right, and the small businesses that are trying to stay a float in a world were consumers demand, more, more, more for much, much, less.
May68 is completely designed, manufactured, embroidered, screen printed, and finished in LA. I've also sourced LA based photographers, hair & makeup, and our model, musician Pearl Charles, is born and raised in Los Angeles. May68 will be a select capsule collection with only a small, limited, number of pieces available every season. Fabrics are sourced from larger LA based designers and we purchase and upcycle their quality, small quantity fabrics that would otherwise go unused. That way fabric waste is at a minimal when producing these pieces. Once the styles are gone they're gone.
And last but not least, May68 is dedicated to my husband extraordinaireLiam Folan and all the love and inspiration he has given to me. May68 is his birth date (now you know really how old he is) and styles are named after places that have meaning to him and places he grew up. All of these years that have lead up to me finally making this clothing collection would have never came to fruition if it were not for him.

Michael Caine, Los Angeles 1966

Michael Caine. Los Angeles. 1966. Oh heart be still!

I recently came across these photographs of devilishly cool Michael Caine in Los Angeles and boy did my heart swoon! The photographs of the rising English actor in Los Angeles were taken by Life magazine photographer Bill Ray. Ray recalls about the young actor that “there is a very fine line between being lazy and being laid back, and Caine knew exactly were that line was. He worked all the time but never broke a sweat. He always knew his lines, but was in no hurry to blurt them out. If things broke down on the set, he was happy in his trailer listening to The Four Tops or grabbing a nap. He was simply made for the movie business.”

And as for the beautiful women that would constantly surround Caine as shown in the pictures below, Ray remembers that Michael “seemed to be a magnet, without ever lifting a finger. And that was another part of the laid-back thing. He seemed to have perfected a way to make things look easy, and so things became easy. Most guys would be happy to kill themselves, walk the burning desert, crawl on broken glass to bed a beautiful girl. But not Caine. He wouldn’t walk across the street. But if a drop-dead gorgeous girl did the walking, and if it wasn’t dinner time, he was more than happy to oblige. You could really hate a guy like that — except that he was so charming, so smooth, that you were very happy to be around him, hoping some of it would rub  off on you — which, of course, it didn’t!

Saucy Mr. Caine!

And in other handsome, sexy English man news: I am incredibly ecstatic to say that during our London trip last week Liam asked me to marry him! We are now engaged and I couldn't be happier! I adore Liam more than Michael Caine himself ;)

We Are The Mods Episode 22

You could not imagine my excitement when fellow Mod enthusiast Warren Peace of We Are The Mods radio fame asked me to contribute my female perspective of the Mad Men's "Mad for Mod" clothing collection currently being sold at mass retailer Banana Republic. I jumped at the fun opportunity because I am a fan of Warren's show and of mod fashion. I was more than happy to give my thoughts about it to someone other than Liam who constantly has to hear my bickering :)

I was joined in the interview by fellow Mod blogger Carlos Perez. Please do yourself a favor if you have even the slightest interested in 60's culture and fashion (and I bet you do since you are reading this blog) and listen to Warren's fantastically fun, utterly groovy program, We Are The Mods and read Carlos's brilliantly honest and smart blog Mod Male. Both are chock full of tidbits by 2 males who live, eat, breath all things mod.

And to anyone visting Ahoy hoy! for the first time because of the radio show - Welcome! I hope you enjoy this little thing I do :)

Christmas 2012 Wish List

The holidays are fast approaching and I am very excited! These last few weeks have been quite emotional with the passing of my beloved grandfather right after Thanksgiving. With that humongous loss I am feeling very welcoming to the Holiday season and to the closeness it brings people.

A fun little tradition I have have been doing on Ahoy hoy is listing my holiday wish list.  Here are some of the items I hope to see under my christmas tree this year.

Lanvin Patent Cap Toe Loafer. Enough said

Pearl earring studs. I've have been wishing for a simple, classic jewelry piece such as these.

Orla Kiely Scented Candle, perfect dose of adorableness for any home.

The Jazz Age by The Bryan Ferry Orchestra - Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry songs performed by a Jazz band. How chic is that?!

Alexander Girard Plate Set, one of my favorite Mid Century artists!

Hoover Twin Tank Steam Mop - I know, so unglamorous but I must have this for all the hardwood floors I have in my apartment!

West Ham United Female Home Kit - so I could sport when Liam and I attended a West Ham game in London next year!

I hope this holiday brings a lot of love, joy, and harmony into everyones lives. xoxox
